In my Introduction to Interior Design online class at UDC, I learned about all the facets of the profession through a culminating project in which I designed a bedroom, bathroom space. I chose materials, lighting, and window treatments. I also used this room to consider accessibility and sustainability, details below.

Bedroom Suite

Redesign for Accessibility: designing for a person in a wheelchair

  • remove the rug for easier movement around the room

  • remove the chair from the desk and make sure the height of the desk was appropriate for the wheelchair

  • cut the walk in closet in half (make it a regular sized closet with lower hanging rods)

  • use the other half of the closet to extend the space in the bathroom for turning radius and larger toilet/shower areas

  • add grab bars for the toilet and the shower

  • make the shower a roll in

  • remove cabinets under the sink in the bathroom and cover the pipes

Consider Sustainability: evaluating the wood floor

  • On the website of the manufacturer, they discuss the ways in which they harvest wood for their floors to be sustainable. But, this could be fluff that they don’t back up with action:

  • Additionally, the flooring is made from sliced french oak. From my research, it seems that some oaks are endangered while others aren’t. French oak doesn’t come up on the endangered wood species.

  • Based on these findings, I support the use of this flooring. It seems sustainable plus it is engineered wood flooring so it has greater longevity.
